Washington, D.C. - The WNBA announced today that the Washington Mystics will tip off the 2016 season at home against conference rival New York Liberty on Saturday, May 14, at 7 p.m. Including opening night, the team will have a three-game home stand to start the season with games against the league's newest team, the Dallas Wings, on May 18 and the Los Angeles Sparks on May 20. Washington will travel to Connecticut to face the Sun for the first road game of the season on May 21.
This season the league unveiled a more balanced regular season format schedule that will see teams play every opponent three times and one conference opponent four times (Chicago for the Mystics). The schedule will rotate annually to maintain a balanced format.
"Having some of the Western teams in our arena more than once a year is something that our fans will enjoy," said head coach and general manager Mike Thibault. "The balanced schedule will make this season even more competitive, which will benefit our league."
The team's two annual camp day games for local children's camps and groups will be held on June 29 at 11:30 a.m. when the San Antonio Stars make their first trip to Verizon Center and on July 20 at 11:30 a.m. against the New York Liberty.
Washington will have two west coast trips that will take place before the Olympic break with games in Seattle (May 26) and Phoenix (May 29) at the beginning of the season and a longer trip in July with stops in San Antonio (July 6), Los Angeles (July 10), Phoenix (July 13), and Seattle (July 15). The Mystics will play 11 of their 17 regular season homes games on the weekend. All weekday (with the exception of the camp days) and Saturday home games will tip off at 7:00 p.m. Sunday home games will start at 4:00 p.m.
